Coast-to-Coast Coordination:
With Overneath based in Southwest Michigan and the shoot in Seattle-Tacoma, we teamed up with local Sea-Tac pros. Director Drew Raklovits of Overneath led the charge with seasoned Seattle-based AD Kelly Flynn, plus local Location Coordinator and G&E team.
Script Mastery:
Writing military scripts without military folks on staff? Director Drew Raklovits did his homework, diving deep into research to capture the essence of the Army National Guard, while also making sure it resonated with both traditional and Gen Z audiences.
Special Effects Magic:
From the jump, the Guard told us they wanted to feature Wildfire Relief and Flood Rescue situations, as domestic response to emergencies is a big part of how the Guard serves our country. They had some archival footage, but we wanted to turn it up a notch and film fire and flood scenes with practical Special FX. Enter Conor Wing, our Portland-based FX Coordinator, who brought his team for a full day of wildfire and flood scene wizardry. We turned up the heat (literally) and made a splash with realistic and engaging effects that added a cinematic flair to the campaign.
Mt. Rainier Shot:
Drew had a vision of ending the commercial with an iconic shot of soldiers standing on a ridge overlooking Mount Rainier. Finding the right scenic overlook was tough, and we ended up with a spot 1.5 hours away from camp. Despite the rainy Seattle weather, we seized a clear night, only to face full fog once we arrived at the overlook. Our DP, Chad Terpstra, suggested shooting it anyway and to “trust the comp” – with the plan of VFX compositing the mountain during post-production. Thanks to VFX wizardry by Overneath’s Jeremy Davidson, the shot turned out incredible.
